If you are planning a relocation, understanding the cost to ship household goods from USA to Thailand is the most crucial step in budgeting your international move.
Many customers ask how much it costs to ship from the USA to Thailand.
Pricing depends on:
- Shipment volume
- Pickup location
- Delivery destination
- Customs requirements
Typical Shipping Categories
Small Shipments
For a small shipment, ask whether air freight or shared-container ocean freight is feasible for the actual contents, packed dimensions and weight. Small size alone does not establish acceptance, price or delivery timing.
Shared Containers
Compare a shared-container (LCL) ocean quote with other feasible options using the same inventory and service scope. Confirm minimum charges, origin and destination handling, and ground pickup and delivery before judging the total cost.
Full Containers
For a larger move, request a full-container (FCL) comparison based on the packed inventory and loading plan. Confirm equipment availability, weight and size limits, access, and all included services; a full container is not automatically the best-value option.
Factors affecting price:
- Fuel surcharges
- Port handling
- Documentation
- Insurance

Build a budget around your actual shipment
There is no single price in this guide: a useful estimate needs your inventory, pickup address, delivery address and requested services. Treat the freight charge as one part of the move. Ask which origin and destination charges are included before deciding whether a quote fits your budget.
For air freight, provide packed dimensions and gross weight per piece and ask the provider to confirm chargeable weight, the calculation used and any minimum charges. For ocean freight, confirm the quoted volume or container basis, units and minimums. USAtoThailand coordinates air, ocean and ground transport through providers, subject to shipment-specific review of cargo restrictions, import eligibility, documents, limits and service scope. Request written acceptance and a dated quote with currency, validity and exclusions before booking.
1. Record what is moving
List boxes and furniture separately, with quantities and dimensions. Label measurements as packed or unpacked; protective materials can change the space required. Identify fragile, unusually heavy or oversized items and provide photographs where measurements alone are unclear. Use our free moving inventory template to keep one version of the list for every estimate.
2. Describe access at both addresses
Include the US pickup ZIP code and the destination city and address in Thailand. Tell the estimator about stairs, elevators, parking restrictions, distance from parking to the entrance and any building delivery windows. If you have not chosen your destination home, say so explicitly and ask which delivery assumptions the estimate uses.
3. Separate transport from the other services
Ask the provider to identify the following items as included, excluded, estimated separately or dependent on a later decision. A blank line is not confirmation that a service is free.
- Origin: collection, packing materials, packing labor, loading and any storage before departure.
- Transport: the quoted shipping method, route assumptions and any listed surcharges.
- Destination: handling, clearance service, delivery to the agreed address, unloading and any unpacking requested.
- Separate obligations: how applicable duties or taxes would be assessed and paid, and who confirms them for your shipment.
- Protection: any optional insurance or other cover, its cost, exclusions, deductible and claims process.
Review our door-to-door shipping guide for questions about the service boundary. Ask for the agreed scope in writing; the phrase “door to door” alone does not identify every included charge.
An illustrative budgeting example
Imagine you initially list twelve boxes and a dining table. Before collection, you decide to add a sofa and four more boxes. This is an illustrative scenario, not a customer case or a price estimate. The revised inventory gives the estimator a different shipment to assess; the original total should not be treated as confirmation of the new cost.
Send the updated list with the added items marked, their dimensions and photographs. Ask whether the transport option, packing work, collection arrangements or final delivery assumptions change. Keep the revised written estimate alongside the inventory version it covers. This is more useful than applying a guessed price per box.
Deciding what is worth shipping
Compare two clearly defined inventories: everything you hope to take, and a smaller list of essentials. Request estimates on the same service basis for both. Compare the difference with your own replacement budget and the personal value of keeping particular belongings. Do not assume a smaller list saves a fixed percentage: ask how the shipment would actually be priced.
For furniture, check the new home’s available space and access before paying to move it. For items you may store, include the quoted storage arrangements in your decision. Avoid discarding belongings solely on an unconfirmed shipping estimate.
Questions to ask before accepting an estimate
- Which inventory version and addresses does this estimate cover?
- What measurement or survey is needed to confirm the shipment size?
- How long is the quote valid, and which changes require a revised price?
- Which destination charges are included and which remain unconfirmed?
- What happens if the delivery address or building access changes?
- Who approves additional work, and how will any additional charge be documented?
- What payment stages and cancellation terms apply?
Prepare your quote request
Send your inventory, pickup ZIP code, Thailand destination, preferred moving window and packing requirements. Highlight unknown details instead of filling them with guesses. A request such as “twelve boxes with dimensions attached, one table, elevator pickup, destination address not yet confirmed” provides a clearer starting point than “a small move.”
